Make a drawstring bag
To make a drawstring bag you will need some fabric and either some ribbon or cord. The fabric needs to be an inch longer than twice the length of your bag by an inch wider than the width.
So if you want to make a 10" by 5" bag then you need to cut a rectangle of fabric measuring 21" by 6".The ribbon or cord to draw the bag together needs to be about 7" longer than the diameter of the bag. So for this bag, the ribbon would need to be 17".
If you have chosen a fabric which will fray do a zigzag stitch along the edges using a sewing machine.
Fold the rectangle of fabric in half so that the right (patterned) side is facing inwards. The fold will form the bottom of the bag.
Measure approximately half an inch from each side and draw two vertical lines. Stop 3/4" from the top on one side of the bag.
Sew up each side of the bag, along the lines.
Fold the top down 3/4" and press flat. Sew around the bottom of this fold to form the pocket for the drawstring.
Turn the bag inside out so the correct side of the fabric is now facing outwards.
Thread the ribbon (or cord) through the 'pocket' and tie. You may want to use a safety pin and some wire to help pull the ribbon through.
You can now leave the bag as it is or embellish it with applique, felt shapes, ribbons and sequins, etc.
