  • Halloween Costumes

Here are some ideas for putting together an easy child's Halloween costume. I have also included a recipe for making your own face paint. If you can't see a costume idea here that you like try looking at online costume sites for something to inspire you, then take a look at the items around your home to see if it is something you could knock up on a budget.

Recipe for home made face paint

    2 tsp of cornstarch
    1 tsp face cream (moisturiser)
    1 tsp water
    4 drops of food colouring

The food colouring is optional. For example, if you were doing a vampire, skeleton or ghoul you would not need to add colouring. Try green for Frankenstein's monster or red for fake blood.

    Mummy

The budget for this costume depends on your preference - you either need several rolls of bandages (gauze) or if you are on a very tight budget you could use toilet roll. For this costume, it helps if the clothes your child is wearing underneath are fairly neutral (preferably white) so any parts you've missed will be less noticeable and the colours wont show through the gauze. Wrap the bandages around your child and secure with a small safety pin, or tie the ends together if you can. If you want to 'age' the mummy costume you can dye the gauze with very diluted tea, or add mould or moss with dabs of green poster paint. Use white face paint (or the recipe at the top of the page) to do your child's make-up.

    Witch

Dress your child up in black. If you don't have a black dress, you can always use a binliner with holes cut in for the head and arms and tie a ribbon or string around the middle to define the waist. Add a broom if you have one, or cut a twig (minus the leaves) to make a magic wand. A witches hat can be made easily from a big black sheet of paper (or card) and some sellotape. Cut a large circle from card, and cut out a smaller circle - about the circumference of your child's head - out the centre. Make a big cone shape, the bottom of which chould be equal to, or slightly larger, than the hole you just cut out. Tape the cone to the brim of the hat and you're done!

    Robin Hood

You will need some green clothing for this costume. If you can't find any green trousers (try charity shops) then brown trousers will also work with a green t-shirt. Draw a fake beard on your child with face paint (or a marker pen if you don't mind the fact it will take a little effort to wash off! Make a bow and arrow and the costume is complete.

    Pirate costume

For the bottom half of the costume wear either knee length shorts or jeans (preferably ripped or a bit scruffy looking). If they are an old pair of jeans, cut them off at the knee. On the top half wear a stripey t-shirt. Make an eye patch from black paper, punch a little hole in each side and knot some black elastic through these so the eye patch can be secured around your child's head. Add or make a bandana and tie a scarf around the waist.. You could also cut a sword shape from some thick card and paint it.

    Princess costume

This is a very easy costume to make on short notice. Either use your daughter's best dress or try charity shops and boot sales for cheap ballroom and dancing dresses. Make a crown out of cardboard. You can purchase silver card from many craft shops or you could either paint the card silver/gold or wrap the finished crown in tin foil. To give it extra sparkle, add sticky gems to the crown (these are available from anywhere that sells card making or scrapbooking supplies). Or to make a cone hat make a large cone out of paper or card. To do this you will need to cut out a triangle with a curved bottom. The bottom needs to be the same width as the circumference of your child's head and it needs to be about 45cm tall. If you have some, add some tulle or netting as an embellishment.

To make it a fairy princess costume, make a wand out of wooden dowelling or a pencil, and some card. Paint the wooden dowelling or pencil with metallic coloured paint and/or glitter glue. Cut out a star shape from the card and paint it the same colour. Glue this on to the stick with superglue.
