  • Masks

To make a mask you will need:

  • A paper plate. Or draw around a plate onto some coloured card and cut out the circle.

  • String or elastic, for holding the mask in place.

  • Craft materials for decorating the mask - coloured paper, pens, crayons, paint, glitter, etc.

  • The basic technique for making a child's mask is shown below. For illustration purposes, the instructions tell you how to make a cat.

    (1) Hold the paper plate over your child's face and mark roughly in pencil where the eyes are. If prefered, you can also mark where your child's nose is, if you want to create a mask which does not cover the whole face. Cut out the eye holes and the bottom of the mask (if applicable). See the diagrams below.

    (2) Make ears out of triangles cut from card. Fix them to the mask with a stapler or glue.

    (3) Decorate the mask with paints, pencils, crayons or pen. You could also try techniques such as glueing on scraps of tissue paper to cover the mask. Or add cardboard shapes to pick out the features of the mask, such as two circles for the cheeks and a triangle for the nose.

    (4) Cut 3 pipe cleaners in half and glue them onto the mask to make whiskers.

    (5) Make a hole either side of the mask (a hole punch is ideal if you have one). Thread elastic through the holes to make a strap, or knot a piece of string, wool of ribbon round each hole to make two ties. The mask is complete!
