  • Pebble pets

You can now find a step by step tutorial (with photos) for painting a ladybird pebble pet at www.rainydayskidscrafts.com.

To make a pebble pet you will need a pebble, some acrylic paint and a paint brush. The pebble or stone has to be a fairly good size and preferably quite rounded or oval. If you don't have any acrylic paint, poster paint mixed with a little PVA glue will also work.

The easiest pebble pet designs are ladybirds:

For younger children, paint the stone red and leave it to dry. Use a black marker pen to draw on the wings, head and spots. Then glue on two googly eyes. Older children may prefer to leave the first layer to dry then paint the rest of the features, rather than use a marker pen.

Other simple pebble pet designs include a coiled snake, a crab or a tortoise, but almost any animal can be turned into a pebble pet. For example, you could draw a pink nose, some eyes and big ears onto the pebble, glue on a little pom pom as a tail and make a rabbit. Or make a spider by painting a pebble black, drawing on some fangs, glueing on two googly eyes and taping 8 pipe cleaners on the underside of the stone to make the legs.

If your child enjoys this project you can encourage them to make a pebble zoo, with lions, elephants, zebras, etc, or a pebble farm with pigs, sheep, chickens and cows!

Use items from around the home, such as boxes, lolly sticks, tin foil, paper, etc, to make a home for the pebble pets.
