  • Make a Rainstick

You don't need any special craft materials to make your own rain stick, everything you need can be found around the house. You will need:

A cardboard tube (kitchen roll tube, wrapping paper tube or poster tube)
    Baking/greaseproof paper
    Two elastic bands
Rice, gravel, shells, pasta, etc, for the 'rain'
    Materials to decorate the rainstick.

  • Decorate the cardboard tube. You could try glueing wrapping paper over it, painting or colouring it (which may work better if you put a layer of white emulsion on it first and leave it to dry).

  • Cut out two circles from the baking paper, slightly bigger than the width of the tube. Secure a circle over one end of the tube with an elastic band.

  • Fill the tube with the rice or other chosen filler material and seal off the open end with the second circle and elastic band.

  • To work the rainstick tilt it backwards and forwards slowly.

  • See how using different lengths of tube and different filler materials affects how the rainstick sounds.
